Resorbable Bone Graft Materials: Supporting Bone Regeneration in Orthopedic Trauma

In orthopedic trauma surgery, choosing the right bone graft material directly affects a patient's recovery.

Bone grafting is a common intervention for complex fractures and bone defects following trauma or orthopedic surgery. Alongside autologous bone grafting (using the patient’s own bone), resorbable synthetic bone graft materials are gaining attention for supporting bone tissue regeneration without an additional bone-harvesting procedure.

How it works

Resorbable bone graft materials are typically designed with a porous structure that mimics natural cancellous bone, forming a scaffold for the body’s own bone cells to attach to and grow on. Over time, the material is gradually absorbed and replaced by new bone tissue.

Reported advantages of this material group include fewer surgical sites (no bone harvesting needed), shorter operating time, and fewer complications at the donor site. However, the decision to use such materials should be based on a specialist’s individual assessment, depending on the injury location, extent of bone loss, and the patient’s overall health.

In Vietnam, some resorbable bone graft materials imported from China — including the GAIABONE® product line distributed by Jianzhi Medical — are currently completing circulation registration procedures for supply to medical facilities.
